The drum is the center of our community. We invite you to experience the traditional rhythms of Burundi through structured practice, whether you are seeking a connection to your heritage or discovering this instrument for the first time.
OUR TRAINING APPROACH
We welcome individuals, families, and groups of all skill levels. Our goal is to share the techniques and history of the Ingoma in a respectful, open environment.
Individuals & Families: We encourage all ages to participate together.
All Backgrounds: We welcome members of the Burundian diaspora, friends of Burundi, and all members of the wider community.
Skill Levels: No prior drumming experience is required to begin.
THE CURRICULUM
Foundations & Grip: Learn the proper stance and the traditional grip of the drumsticks.
The Three Tones: Master the center bass, rim shots, and side-stick strikes.
Traditional Patterns: Practice the historical “Call and Response” rhythms.
Synchronized Movement: Coordinate arm and body movements with the beat.
Vocal & Dance Integration: Learn the traditional songs and dances of the Ingoma.
The Royal Carry (Ages 12+): Master balancing the drum on your head while moving.
Signature Rhythms: Coaching for advanced players to develop solo sequences.
JOIN THE PERFORMANCE TEAM
Take free team training and perform at special events! For those who wish to represent the group, we offer a dedicated path to becoming a performing member.
Free Team Training: Participation in rehearsals is required for all performers.
Equipment & Uniforms: Performing drummers must purchase their own official uniform and drumsticks. Flexible payment options are available.
