ABOUT US

Our community group has performed drumming and dancing in the Burundi style for more than 20 years. We have appeared at events across the Greater Toronto Area, and have performed internationally at the Civitanova Danze Festival in Italy. From the moment that we enter carrying drums on our heads, to our dynamic jumping and rhythmic chanting, our performances enthrall audiences at community festivals, arts events, corporate celebrations and private weddings.

Sporting a new name and a new look in 2020, Toronto Burundi Drummers continue to preserve and promote Burundi Drumming in Canada. We teach drumming to newcomers and train drummers for the show team. We are a welcoming group, open to all genders, and we currently speak at least 6 languages! Drummers range in age from middle-school youth to older adult. We welcome new drummers at any time.

In 2020, we branched out to plan workshops with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf. We look forward to planning more events that meet the needs of all Canadian residents. Toronto Burundi Drummers gratefully acknowledges the ongoing support of Parkwoods United Church, for their provision of rehearsal space and storage facilities, and for their collaboration with the team engagement in community events.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Toronto Burundi Drummers strives to preserve and promote in Canada, traditional Burundi Drumming Culture which includes both teaching and performing the drumming and dancing; and also includes creating a caring community united by the drumming.
